MacDonald Charles Miller , known to his friends as "Daddy Mac" died quietly on April 19th 2008 in the North Georgia Mountains. Mac was born in Raleigh, NC on November 11th 1935. He was an orphan, known as "Baby Ray"  He was adopted at the age of 5 months by Donald Miller of Dayton Ohio. The family moved to Miami Florida in 1945. Mac's father invented the highly successful brand of shampoo "Vita Fluff"  in the 1940's. The family owned a villa in Havana Cuba and Mac made many trips to the island in the 1950's. Mac became an accomplished fly angler and was a founding member of the Miami Rod &Reel Club, (known today as the IGFA) Mac, a much decorated member over the years caught every species of billfish on fly and held the world record for tarpon in the 1960's Mac, a quiet soft spoken man was a gentle giant of the infant sport of Saltwater Fly Fishing. Unlike Lefty Kreh, Stu Apte and Joe Brooks and other well know pioneers, Mac preferred life under the radar screen of fame and notoriety. From 1956-1963 Mac and his lovely wife Cynthia would spend every Thursday thru Thru Sunday in Islamorada, most often at the La Jolla ( Still there today). He fished mainly with the great guide George Hommel. That's nearly 1000 days of saltwater fly fishing in the days when hardly anyone even knew the sport existed. Mac was truly one of the most remarkable men ever to cast a fly rod. Those who knew and loved him miss him for he touched our lives in special and memorable way. RIP "Daddy Mac" - I'm sure that he's still fishing........
